Trust can be built before the request arrives

Romance scammers may use fake or stolen profiles, flattering messages and a story that prevents an in-person meeting. They often move conversations off the original platform, create a sudden emergency or introduce an investment opportunity after trust has formed.

Slow the conversation down

Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, identity documents or intimate images to someone you have not verified independently. Be cautious when a person asks for secrecy, avoids live verification, repeatedly has an emergency, or directs you to a trading platform or payment account.

Protect yourself without shame
